We originally started out with a 30 gallon tank and stand that we bought at a local fish store (LFS). It was not pre-drilled and was not really set-up for a saltwater tank--but what did we know. That was a definately a learning experience and one that, unfortunately, many newbies face. Eventually we replaced every piece of equipment we bought that fateful day and for Christmas 2004, I even asked for a newer, bigger tank.
The main display tank is a 120 gallon AGA reef ready tank with dual MegaOverflows™. The tank is 48" long x 24" deep x 24" tall and weighs 215 lbs. before a single drop of water is added. Because we live in an older house, we added additional support in the basement to support the weight of a fully filled tank.
We wanted an oak stand and we wanted it to match the style of our older house and future plans for redoing our living room. Therefore, we decided to build the stand using Shaker styling. The first step was the framing. We built the framing using 2x4's and 2x6's. This ensured the stand was study.
Next, we covered the frame with oak. We didn't want any nails to show, so we built a front frame and two side frames using a biscuit joiner and lots of glue. We then connected these together using more biscuits. We also used thin oak plywood to finish off the inside of the stand. Then we test fit the future electrical panel.
The tank is finally in place! The electrical panel (shown above) has been designed to be removable so that the plumbing, etc. can be accessed if needed, yet it hidden from everyday viewing. However, we left room enough room above the panel framing so that I can feel the bulkheads and piping, and inspect for leaking on a regular basis.
The canopy was built with 1x2" framing and was also covered with solid oak. I found
wood vent covers and used one on each end to cover the
pc fans that are used to provide necessary ventilation. The top opens for easy access to the lights and overflows. The inside was painted white for the best light reflection.
The doors are still in progress and will be completed soon...
